I mean, it's a decent work of literature, but it's brought up too many times in response to almost any authoritarian government function, a citation that's really stale, in my opinion.

The plot is one you would expect from a precocious schoolboy at the start of high school. I mean, the protagonist [spoilers] renounces everything he believes in because of his phobia of rodents. I admit, he was given a terrible fate, but I'd have expected him to muster up some semblance of last hope inside of him, and deny O'Brian the satsifaction.[/spoilers] Way too anti-climactic IMO.

What do you think?

hey /lit/, I'm reading 1984 right now. But I can't help but notice that certain aspects aren't really subtle. For example, "Freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength, war is peace", I know the book has anti-totalitarian themes but sometimes it just seems too blatantly obvious. Anybody else feel this way?

I have to read this for my school's summer reading. Not terrible so far. Discuss 1984.

Asked you guys for some help in devising a title for my A2 English Lit coursework on 1984 and A Clockwork Orange. I've finally come up with "The linguist Halliday said an anti-language is a vehicle of resocialisation. To what extent can the languages created by the authors of '1984' and 'A Clockwork Orange' be considered anti-languages?"

Is it a decent title for a 2500 word essay?

Have to compare and contrast 1984 with another novel for my A2 English Lit coursework assignment. Decided to go for 'A Clockwork Orange' and I'm looking to concentrate on the use of language in the two texts. Any suggestions for potential coursework titles?

I don't care if it's entry level, there's no better dystopian book. I don't care if BNW applies to today better than 1984 did, it was a warning, not a prediction.

I just picked this up at my library. What should I expect?

This book is total fiction. I mean, look at how absurd the situations in it are! Music created by machines that is completely void of artistic merit, telescreens in every household that constantly display propaganda and mindless garbage, streets constantly monitored by helicopters and security cameras, government bureaucracies that spew out misinformation and contradict themselves, perpetual war against nonexistent enemies for the sole purpose of keeping the economy running and citizens afraid...

Total fiction.

This book is total fiction. I mean, look at how ridiculously absurd the situations in it are! Video screens in every home that spout out only propaganda 24/7, mindless music made by machines that involves no artistic talent, perpetual fake wars against nonexistent enemies to keep the economy running and to keep the citizens fearful, government bureaucracies that produce worthless and false data, new and proper ways of speaking which have the sole purpose of censoring people...

Total fiction.

So, who was on top? The inner party members surely didn´t appear to have a too good situation. I belive at some points George even implied that inner party members were being killed off and if my memory serves me then he also talked about their poor poor living standards at several times.

In Book 2 Chapter 1, Why does the inner party show the prisoner transport parade to the proles and the outer part?
