I see. I understand that the Shrike was a tool from the Core UI to fish out the Empathy Entity in the past, but everything surrounding it, the UI war and the time travel elements don't seem to add up. Like what is the deal with the underground labyrinths? It was just to lure a bunch of humans to bunk there in fear of the fake Ouster invasion so they can be zombified with cruciforms to serve the Core AI for...reasons? It all seems arbitrary and convoluted. Compared to other sci-fi series where I don't understand much of it, but get the feeling that I could with careful re-reads because the answers are all there, Hyperion feels hollow, like there is nothing solid to uncover. It's a bit underwhelming. The final confront of Brawne and the Shrike was VERY underwhelming.
