Why is it nearly impossible to read reviews without encountering people whining about "pretentious" or "purple" prose? And not just for books written with an intentionally archaic style, you see the same "critique" smeared across even the most generic fantasy novels. It's almost as though people take any attempt to use anything more than the absolute basics of English as a personal insult.

Why is Red Dead represented by Walden? That has to be one of the most Massachusetts books ever written. It has nothing in common with the wild west beyond the fact they're both in the United States, but that's like saying St. Petersburg and Ulan-Ude are practically the same because they're both in Russia. I guess you could say it has to do with the self-reliance aspect, but there's a giant difference between self-reliance as Thoreau lived for economic and philosophical reasons and being a cowboy with a ranch in New Mexico of several hundred acres.

Anyway, it's not like there's any shortage of western literature...

Nigger what? It's not common knowledge because they're contradictory and confusing. Read Plotinus, Augustine, Palamas, and Dionysius instead of secondary literature glorifying gnostics. Bro just be in the world but not of it, that's what Christianity teaches. Too much focus on either the worldly or otherworldy is a distraction, because the prisoner who was released from the cave still went back to tell the others what he saw. There is a tangible mystical reality that is magnified from our unique optic, as people in the world who are capable of seeing beyond it. The Church teaches us to see this reality, even though it still does not have all the answers. Ignoring it because of the drug that is "knowing" will only cause you to lose your way. Don't think of Creation as a trap, but something you should be prepared to move on from. Making it into a prison will cause you to become spiritually erratic and never know the peace that can be found in the most simplest yet challenging way; live your life, see the signs, and try not to sin too much. That's it, and that's all that can be said on the matter.

If you are isolated, you have a narrowly constrained view of reality which is of little value for anyone in a different scenario. You don't ask a man whose been trapped in a closet his entire life to give you advice about, say, camping in the desert, or how to make love, or literally anything.

Scandinavia is effectively in that closet. Their geographic separation has largely insulated them from all external geopolitical conflict pre-world war II, and even then, only Finland, Denmark and Norway really took the brunt of it. Any country so isolated has little of value to say for a person in a different setting, let alone in a modern and connected world.
