The prose is characteristic of the subject matter in the sense that it invokes consonance with a cold edge. It's beautiful despite how mind numbing and grotesque it is while still maintaing an underpinning of prophetic wisdom, a lot like the different ways in which humans manifest violence weave themselves together to describe the same ends of eternal death.
It is the greatest novel ever written by an American author and it's not even close. There's a couple of reasons why it can be difficult to read, least of all being the prose although it can take some time to adjust to the starkness and overall temperament of its muted brutality. Stick it out for another hundred pages or so and you'll start to understand the phantasmagorical miasma that its themes instill. It's like a trance. An unlimited hell in the trip of an evil drug.
