I've been lurking here for a while, but I still can't seem to understand the average e/lit/ist. I figured I should just flat out ask and see how it goes, so hopefully this thread won't crash and burn.

What is it that turns you off to a book, and why does it turn you off? Are there any particular plot devices or overtones that are unappealing to you? Is it the choice of diction and use of grammatical syntax? What about the character development and their interaction?

I'm sincerely at a loss here, so hopefully you can enlighten me.
