What books do you see someone reading, or see on a bookshelf, or hear someone praising that makes you instantly think they are only interested in it because they think it makes them look intelligent?

I want to "get into" reading again and into basic philosophy.

After going through the wiki it seems everyone seems to hate Plato's The Republic. How come?

This book was way too difficult. They ramble on about stuff that isn't really interesting. I'm halfway in this book, at what point does the plot begin?

Socrates also seems like a loser, not really someone I would identify with
