"In the nick of the time of the in-light, and we were— not through the christ, and with the Eucharist cracked, crossroad, but because the first light of the view of this parallax was to be out of this modality, and in the being of my own ineluctability." -James Joyce

I've read all of his major works except for Finnegans Wake. It only gets better really. For all the criticism of Ulysses, its a profound work. I regularly go over some of the episodes in my head.
A lot of those modernist guys were writing in response to the "death of god" as a historical event. Joyce, Proust, Beckett and Kafka all have the most compelling and sometimes even uplifting responses to this. Its the construction of a secular mythology in which the readers can navigate the apparent meaningless of life and ultimately find something beautiful about it.
A Portrait of the Artist as a Youngman would be the logical next step if you'd like to read more Joyce.
I'm up for discussing some of the stories of Dubliners as well. I think I'm the only one to have found a jab at Proust in the Dubliners' story "Two Gallants."
