I know Vonnegut had a hard-on for editing as he went along, but that doesn't mean all great novels are pre-planned. The Sound and The Fury basically originates from a scene of a little girl by a creek who runs home climbs a tree and watches funeral inside. The rest of it was Faulkner fleshing her life out.

Actually, I thought Vonnegut was one of those guys who wrote his stories paragraph by paragraph.

My vote is Keep the Aspidistra Flying, Crime and Punishment, The Young Lions, there are others but I can't remember...

Umm, looking for some books to read. But after my last few reads, lately I've been hungry for some books that sort of give more of a thought-pondering, universal and neutral (neutral) standing, but not too overdone or in your face, statement or idea. A book that you wouldn't feel to be a legit waste of your time and leave with you something after.
