I heard you guys hate G.R.R.M, but this is not about him, what I'd like are suggestions of series similar to A Song of Ice and Fire.

This is pretty much the only fantasy I've ever read, so standard entry level stuff would be good, but also stuff that is similar to this would be great. A few things I like about ASOIAF:

>Vast universe with mainly human races
>Characters that are never solely good or bad/black or white
>POV chapters (I love this about ASOIAF, though I doubt it's a common thing
>Conspiracy, plotting, heinous crimes, injustice, shocks, heartbreak, a "nobody is safe" atmosphere.
>Rich and dense history

I'm interested in this series but the books require a pretty massive investment. Is the tv series good enough when compared to the books?

Sorry for another thread about this series, but last night I finally finished Dance, so now I can browse threads/forums discussing ASOIAF without having to worry about spoilers. This thread will contain spoilers, so read at own risk!

What do you guys think so far? Predictions for the next book? I can't believe that Jon snow got stabbed several times and presumably killed. Also what happend to the Quentyn fellow was a shame I guess, but goddamn, you don't try to initiate a dance with dragons like that!

So /lit/, These keep getting hype like crazy, and while that's probably not the best reason to read a series of books, it's got me interested. Are they worth the time? Or should I just wait until they are all published and save myself the hassle of waiting for years between books?

A Fest for Crows made me want to give up. I literally only wanted to read two of characters in it. RR should have stopped introducing new PoV characters after the 2nd book. I don't know why I should care about Brienne.

Should I keep reading when I know RR will most certainly die before writing A Dream of Spring?

Okay, I've seen enough about these to want to give them a try. I'm not that into fantasy but do love the classics (Morte d'Arthur over something like Lord of the Rings.) Should I go for it?

I don't visit /lit/ very much so I apologize if people ask about this series a lot. I looked through the first several pages but I didn't see anyone asking about this particular series....a few Ayn Rand threads and some Hunter Thompson but nothing about this one. Anyway, I want something interesting to read and was wondering if this series deserves all the hype it's receiving since the show started airing. Again, sorry if this is asked all the time.

Hey all! New to /lit/ but I have become enthralled by George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire. Is anyone else as totally f-ing stoked about the HBO series as I am? I think it's gonna be epic.

Is the series A Song of Ice and Fire worth reading? I had a friend tell me it was, and a creative writing teacher say it's shit.

Started reading this on /lit/'s suggestion.

Read the first one well enough, kinda slow in the middle but I liked some of the characters well enough that I finished it. Most of the big shockers lost most of their weight because the writing got predictable long before the author got around to actually letting something happen. Basically I came to expect anyone strong, brave, honorable, commanding or righteous in anyway would be destroyed by betrayal, some dastardly plot or just by accident or plot convenience.

Now I'm about half way through the second book and It's really becoming a chore and it feels like I'm putting far more effort into it than enjoyment I get from it.

I get it's trying to be all dark and gritty but it's almost comical at this point. It's like the author is trying so hard to distance himself from your traditional fantasy tales he ends up with a world inhabited primarily by ye olde dick dastardly all curling his mustachio and plotting along to do ill deeds.

While this was all amusing at the start even tyrion's chapters are becoming dull. The books so far have one note to play it seems, all the plotting and scheming gets old after awhile and without a hero to triumph over a villain once in a while to mix things up there really isn't any surprise when the next even-remotely good character dies by some hidden plot. I'm fairly certain Robb's going to get his soon enough I'd be surprised he lasted this long if it weren't for the painfully slow pace of the book.

Does it get any better, or are the next to basically the same? I just can't seem to get myself to care about who's deceiving who anymore. Unless I'm like a page away from the dragons suddenly appearing out of no where and eating most of the seven kingdoms I don't really think I'll be finishing this one.

What the fuck is up with all the hype these books get?

Yeah, they're good, but they aren't amazing. You want amazing? Read Dune.

So.. what do I do now that I've finished the first four? I don't think I can wait another 5 years for him to finally put out Dance.

Such amazing books though. Even the fourth one, which is easily the weakest, was still pretty good. Though I don't want to have to wait until the 6th book to get a resolution to the stuff presented in it.

I think i would like the series even more, if it had less magic and supernatural things in it. Especially prophecies, i hate prophecies.

A song of fire and ice.

Is this shit good? I saw some fanart and I really loved the setting. I was a big fan of LOTR for a while, so thought maybe I try another fantasy novel.
