The eye is imperfect. A little moisture, a little color in a dark chamber, looking out on a middle range of light, full of vague impressions. As an organ of insight it is limited by the unforseen. If we sharpen it, so that it sees the play of chance more clearly, there are complaints of pain caused by excess of illumination. They ask for their illusions back. They prefer their images veiled. The eye was created for a realm of shadows, not for the unbroken light. Light, the great power of the universe, would incinerate you if it approached you without its veiled prism of colors. Beauty, truth, knowledge are unbearable to the murky eye : mere shadows of them suffice. Why do you press beyond your limits?
