infinite jest unironically changed the way I look at things, DFW has tremendous insights into both minor and major aspects of life

Why is everyone so excited about this book on this board? Looks like a super long and boring book to me

I cant believe there is such liltle discussion about it. more than a thousand pages, interesting structure, informational and comical footnotes, sex and drugs, culturally and politically relevant. You people really need to read Luis Goytisolo's Antagonía. It's been translated for a while now. pic unrelated.

this book got me back into reading. which is kind of ridiculous when i think of how much of a roadblock the book is, but i was blown away

I learned recently about a video-game term that teenagers these days throw around: "overpowered," or "OP" for short. If a character type in a competitive video game is inordinately more powerful than the others, then it is "overpowered"; the game as a result is deemed "unbalanced," and fans will complain on forums that the developers have delivered to them a swift "slap in the face." It's an interesting metaphor. Life, of course, is no game, and it's a truism that it isn't fair. But every once in a while we get a striking reminder of how unevenly Mother Nature distributes her gifts. Take the literary world for instance. By any measure, David Foster Wallace, the author of the acclaimed novel Infinite Jest, was overpowered. If he were a class in a role-playing game, then you wouldn't hear the end of the complaining. When it came to the writing of fiction, Wallace blew his competitors—historical and contemporary both—out of the water. To borrow another term from video gaming, it's fair to say that he "owned" them. When Infinite Jest hit book stores in February 1996, the title's two words were in the mouth of every serious reader in America; every living writer, however, was faced with a different pair of words: "Game Over."

I'm 200 pages in and it's sooooo boring on quite on the nose with it's philosophical themes. Not sure what I was expecting, but I was promised one of the best American contemporary novel.

Is it worth continuing? Usually by that point I am enthralled with the book, especially big ass books like these.

This has to be one of the worst ending lines in literature. I also don't understand why Wallace felt the need to add "Game, Set and Match" after this instead of simply, "The End". Why was this necessary?

I read some online theories and I get the big stuff, but it's the details. Can someone explain to me why the Attorney literally HATES Don Gately? Who is Tooty and what did Don do to her?

Also I don't understand Infinite Jest itself. Has Hal seen it? Has Orin seen it? How does the AFR know about it? How does anyone know about it? I feel like the only people who know it exists would be dead. Did James ever watch it? Why didn't he die?
