What I need to read before I reread Tolkien to experience his works to the fullest?
Besides the Bible

Okay, so here's the thing about Tom Bombadil, he is the baddest motherfucker in the entire book. He's so badass that he doesn't have to give a shit about any of it. The One Ring, the almighty trinket that threatens to corrupt Gandalf, elves, and men alike? He just wears it, and he just lets it go. He can see people when they use it to disappear. HE can make IT disappear. He's so merry because he's beyond all of it. He fears nothing, because he's on another level; bright blue is his jacket and boots are yellow indeed.

Third time reading the books, just got to Tom Bombadil's chapter. Should I skip it?

Also noone actually reads the songs, right?

Is there a single bigger pleb filter in all of literature than Tom Bombadil? If you bitch about Tom Bombadil, and you do not enjoy his chapters in LOTR, then congratulations, you are a midwit.

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! fal lal the willow!
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!

Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! My darling!
Light goes the weather-wind and the feathered starling.
Dawn along under Hill, shining in the sunlight,
Waiting on the doorstep for the cold starlight,
There my pretty lady is, River-woman's daughter,
Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than the water.
Old Tom Bombadil water-lilies bringing
Comes hopping home again. Can you hear him singing?
Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! and merry-o,
Goldberry, Goldberry, merry yellow berry-o!
Poor old Willow-man, you tuck your roots away!
Tom's in a hurry now. Evening will follow day.
Tom's going home again water-lilies bringing.
Hey! Come derry dol! Can you hear me singing?

let us assume you are an engineer with a moderately high salary. buy some land nearby, so that the commute is long but you can afford property. learn to garden. learn to farm. learn to grow your own food and learn a trade that you can sell. buy physical books. go running. meditate. pray. become involved with local farmers markets. quit your job. raise your family. write haikus and pin them to the walls of your office door. leave them on the steps of the library, where you volunteer to help immigrants read. share your excess food with your neighbors.
