He lay listening to the water drip in the woods. Bedrock, this. The cold and the silence. The ashes of the late world carried on the bleak and temporal winds to and fro in the void. Carried forth and scattered and carried forth again. Everything uncoupled from its shoring.

Peering down into the water where the morning sun fashioned wheels of light, coronets fanwise in which lay trapped each twig, each grain of sediment, long flakes and blades of light in the dusty water sliding away like optic strobes where motes sifted and spun.

What do you want to do? said the kid. Get a drink of water. Other than that. I dont know.

the Sound and the Fury, Wise Blood, the Heart is a Lonely Hunter, the Glass Menagerie, Suttree. I would recommend Eudora Welty but I've only read her short stories so far.
I also like Thomas Wolfe's novels like "Look Homeward, Angel" and "You Can't Go Home Again," but those are something different entirely, it's Southern litfic more akin to poetry but it's still pretty dark.

Did you catch the comparison between the kid and the dwarf with the Judge and the kid immediately after? Stuff like that happens throughout the story, such as the two puppies getting baptized and then the two guys in the church.

He lay listening to the water drip in the woods. Bedrock, this. The cold and the silence. The ashes of the late world carried on the bleak and temporal winds to and fro in the void. Carried forth and scattered and carried forth again.

Years later he'd stood in the charred ruins of a library where blackened books lay in pools of water. Peering down into the water where the morning sun fashioned wheels of light, coronets fanwise in which lay trapped each twig, each grain of sediment, long flakes and blades of light in the dusty water sliding away like optic strobes where motes sifted and spun.

They sat on a bench and Sproule held his wounded arm to his chest and rocked back and forth and blinked in the sun. What do you want to do? said the kid. Get a drink of water. Other than that. I dont know. He poured the tumbler full. Drink up, he said. The world goes on. We have dancing nightly and this night is no exception.

>The more she drank, the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew, and her thirst sent her crawling to the stream to suck up more water.

Finally he wrote a story about that damn agua. For me? It's San Pellegrino.
