It was in some ways but it was also easier to develop your own tastes. There were decent reading guides out there you could come across (pic related) and you'd have to work out your own takes based on the primary sources themselves; one wasn't inundated with the opinions of contrarian pseuds and shit like wokeism was dialed down and not amplified to the extent we have now. It seems like it's a lot harder to break out of that mindset now because of the internet...someone who appreciates print should be able to understand that.

This Reading Guide is full of them. Out of print but you can find used copies online (and keep an eye out for it at used bookstores).

Looks like you're off to a good start. Check out this reading guide (pic). It's old and out of print (but you can easily find cheap used copies online)

I agree. I found out about Mishima around 2005 and didn't get one of his books until Haruki Murakami made Japanese lit popular enough that his, and many others, books are now findable in used bookstores.

I bought (pic) when I was in high school and have slowly been collecting shit that it recommends. (I'm a newfag here so it was my main source for finding out about books; it's actually great if you can find a used copy of it somewhere (I think it's been out of print for a long time)).

Use this (purchase it and save the rest of your money until you can go through it)

Yeah, I figured that's why they're rare. I mentioned it in an earlier comment, poetry books are hard to come by for that reason as well. (That's why, most often, you'll only find anthologies and things the stores can buy as overruns (not from individual people coming in and selling their books).

Best reading guide I ever bought (pic). A lot of the authors in it aren't really cult anymore...but at the time it was published it was worth its weight in gold...it was my buying guide for years (and there are still authors you probably haven't heard of that you might want to look into). (Side recommendation, enjoy).

Did you read anything else by him? I like to lurk used bookstores and hunt for shit; Japanese lit blew up a lot in the last 10 years so shits easier to find now.

If you have a similar hobby, I bought this book (pic) in high school and found a tonne of great shit through it. I've used it as a hunting guide. (It's offline /lit).
