Sure thing.

First point I would like to discuss is the following:

While listening to jazz, how are you able to separate what is truly good from stuff that is just pure horsepiss?

I've got a few dedicated albums that are just excellent, but there are others that really sound like they gave a room of toddlers horns and said "BLOW!"

I laughed harder at parts of Suttree and Trout Fishing In America than I have while reading any other books.

After a Blood Meridian session, I recommend a little Brautigan to get the heart light again.

OP, I agree completely and think everyone should read this novel.

I can't really figure out why it is so overlooked, but when put alongside other 'classics,' you get to see what real talent is.

Agreed, reading about writers is no fun and usually makes the author seem quite self-absorbed.

Did you enjoy this book?

If so, my suggestion is to shoot yourself in the face.

If you hated this book, continue on and multiply. You will be needed for your ability to recognize senseless drivel.

I don't do any of the things you listed, OP. In fact, I don't even know what manga means and the only reason I know what graphic novel means is because of that Sin City movie. Never got into comic books as a kid, either.

When you are reading these items alongside 'regular' novels, what types of novels are you reading? Stuff like Absalom, Absalom!? Or different selections?

Sorry, hope you enjoy those things.

Quite a few folks made some good points about fantasy/sci-fi in this thread, and remained civil when comparing this genre to traditional fiction and/or novels.

I think the OP's question can be answered very simply, though...

Fantasy is for children and huge nerds.

Consider two different games:

1) Magic: The Gathering

2) Chess

Now why would these two things be viewed in a different light?

They both can be played by most anyone, can't they?

They both involve strategy.

Both games have tournaments, etc...

Consider the history and esteem of chess and then compare it to Magic: The Gathering.

This is why fantasy is never included... It isn't even in the same ball park, and would be laughable to try and argue this to most anyone in the educated world.

I was actually making the Nick Cave thread in jest to poke a little fun at the real person making them every day.

Sorry you misunderstood my intent.

I think The Boatmen's Call was an excellent album.

He is a talented musician.

He is published due to this musical talent.

His literary work isn't top level.
