The Trilogy by Sienkiewicz: "With Fire and Sword", "The Deluge", "Fire in the Steppe" ("Colonel Wolodyjowski" is a better translation imo)

The Witcher series by Sapkowski but I strongly prefer Short Stories over the Saga

Discworld series by Pratchett but mostly early ones. I am reading "Guards!Guards!" in original and need to say that Polish translation was amazing.

I am big fan of swashbuckler films and picaresque novels (not sure of translation, in polish it's "literatura sowizdrzalska" https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literatura_sowizdrzalska)) or with element of it. I like magic realizm elements and this american republican modernism in culture

I've read all but Recognitions and Women and Men and would pretty much echo this statement. I don't think 2666 deserves to be on this list -- not because it isn't great, it is -- but because it's a translation and both its "difficulty" and "quality" are pretty much unknowable to the English reader in a tangible way.

My Spanish isn't bad, but it isn't good enough. I read Latin at an advanced level, ancient Greek fine with a dictionary, and French fine with a dictionary. I only mention this to point out that I think about translating a great deal, and conflating a translation with an original text does great disservice to both. I read N Wimmer's 2666 and Savage Detectives, and both really were wonderful novels that I want to read in the original. Just, pretending like we could judge the aesthetic power / quality / difficulty of an original based on a translation is pretty disingenuous.

What's the best translation of Don Quixote?

I'm not being ironic, Islam is actually pretty based if you're going to the religion thing. Ibn Arabi would chuckle at your question though, since God is everywhere and even though Islam is the purest of religions, love is its own religion that even the idol worshipers held to.

Real talk though:
1) Read a lot of shit from a lot of different ideas and perspectives.
2) Take what makes sense, forget what doesn't.
3) Live your life accordingly without being a fuckhead about it.

I bought the P. A. Motteaux translation of Don Quixote, how bad a mistake did I make?

What exactly is the deal with the parliament of death scene in Don Quixote? It feels like there's obvious symbolism here, but I'm drawing blanks. Having actors portraying death, angels, demons, political authority, and love seems seems just too easy, but I can't think of what it could possibly mean. Is it just basically 'setting up' Don Quixote and Sancho's conversation about theater being a mirror for humanity or his other point about life being comparable to a play? This book isn't particularly challenging, but I feel like a lot of 'the point' in these kinds of scenes is just going over my head. Every time I think I grasp something, a scene pops up that changes how I think about the book and what it means.

What is your thoughts on Don Qoixote? Wikipedia says it is "best literary work ever written" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote
