Easy. We stop giving stuff for kids to read, not until they are in college

Then the average reading of an adult will go up to college level.

Is there a difference between reasonable and rational? Why do we use it in such different ways if both comes from "ratio"?

This is literally what I was thinking about today OP, so what I've done is whenever I'm reading I keep a set of index cards next to me and when I see a word I don't know, I write it down and look it up and make a vocabulary flashcard (kind of like back in middle school). So whenever I'm reading something for class I come across a lot of new word. This is particularly good when reading Christopher Hitchens not only for his diction, but also for the other terms (french, latin, etc) he uses and so you learn a lot of them (well, if you're young and didn't already know them like me)
