Good evening /lit.

I know the board has been riddled with degeneracy lately, but can we for once rise above the memes and discuss the value of reading.

The fact that this board has such a healthy population speaks for itself. What I would like to know what personal value has reading offered you? Perhaps the amount one reads relates to different benefits.

Enlighten me.

The problem is on the internet is that there's no way to solve the issue of sorting through shit using existing payment models.

The internet won't accept subscription fees for anything, (nor should it knowing that for every "good subscription" like the New Yorker there's a service like Xbox Live), but that means there's no way to support highly niche websites. You have to either sell out to the LCD to run ads, get paid by shills to allow for postings which (while technically ads) circumvents peoples' adblockers and mental defenses, accept that you have to illogically run the service at a loss, or rely on wealthy benefactors and patronage.

The issue is that donations aren't actually that ethically pure. You're not Wikipedia sized, eventually you're going to have to accept the conflict of interest which comes with a shitty poet who pays the bills simultaneously posting his poems and expecting support. You're right back where you started: tolerate crap and keep the site alive, or accept you may need to shut down everything to keep your integrity.

I find it interesting that the question of "How do we decentralize content curation such that moderators are unnecessary to prevent the decline of quality" doesn't get much focus when it's the root cause of most of the internet being crappy. I wonder why that is.
