I have the same issue but I think I actually have ADD. I'll be able to focus for short bits but my mind wanders and I have to go back a paragraph or two and start over.

Also, is Pagan Imperialism worth reading?

How can I write a popular book?
Should I just pump out as much schlock as possible and hope one catches on, or try to formulate one book into being a hit?

I have a recommendation for people struggling to read: read books you might think are "below" your level: airport novels, genre fiction, even Animorphs or some Scholastic equivalent.

Trying to read actual literature as a way of developing a reading habit is a sure pathway to failure. If you can't already sit down and immerse yourself in a book there is a fundamental problem that needs to be addressed. Literature assumes that you have already solved this problem and are a "reader" with the ability to sit down and concentrate on a story. Literary authors will do things that are more complex, esoteric, or artistic because they'll be assuming you're working with a baseline level of attention that won't be too disturbed by something challenging. If you struggle to read at all then this is not where you should be.

The types of books I mentioned at the beginning do not make that assumption of attention about their reader. In fact it's the opposite, and the author's prime focus is to keep you reading and entertainedbabove all else. This is a big help to someone struggling because it means the author is specifically catering to them. It is much easier to get into the "zone' with a book with prose that is meant to be fun (remember when reading was fun?).

If you do this your focus will begin to develop in this process, and you will take that with you on your reading journey. If you read in school then this process has already happened once with you, and all that needs to happen if for you to go through the steps again with the proper material (not Brothers K or Ulysses).

Doing this has really helped me. The challenge was I had to admit I was having trouble in the first place, and putting my pride aside about not reading "serious" books. Trying to read literature again after having fallen off for so long was a miserable experience for me because I lacked that basic focus I had when I was younger. Now I actually do feel like a reader again. I hope you can too!

Actual book discussion thread.
>What are you reading?
>How do you like it? Why?

I'm halfway through Wittegestein's Nephew from Thomas Bernhard. Cannot recommend this guy enough. Some of the most genuinely funny books I have ever read, never fails to make me lough out loud. I am enjoying this one because it's a bit more personal, also - he usually doesn't talk about people he love. The general "crazy old austrian meandering about life" style is a bit toned down, here, but it's still highly entertaining.

Dead Poets Society (book, script, or film Idgaf) is a good example of sublimination of libido, as love and desire is channeled through poetry.

Relationships themselves won't fix you and not having them isn't "based" either. Having a depressing existence is one that can only be limited. We waver between feelings without the ability pick which ones we want. The feelings always come back. Always. I don't have any answers for you. I'm still figuring things out myself. The most worrisome thing is even old people seem to be coping as far as I can tell. There appears to be no way around this. I can tell you one thing. I do love my gf and would never trade her for anything. She loves me more than I ever imagined I could be loved. Even if I lose her, I would never tell someone to give up on that for one of solitude. I was lonely too long to know for a fact that it isn't fulfilling to share your life with just yourself. Stay cool, anon. Hopefully we both make it.

/lit/ has always been something enjoyed by a minority of the population. Actually GOOD /lit/ is enjoyed by an even smaller segment of the population. With the massive rise in easily accessible entertainment (internet, vidya, tv, sportsball) people see even less incentive to commit themselves to investing in a long and educational book. Our society has completely deep-fried its dopamine receptors.

Start small. Set a daily quota and make reading part of your routine. Could be as small as 10 pages to start. Personally I like to read as I drink my morning coffee and after dinner. Find when works best for you. Also when you're starting out you should only read things because you think they're interesting and not because you think they're intelligent things to read, like >>16507818 said. There is absolutely nothing wrong with only reading fiction or the like if that's what you're in to. Pleasure reading should be pleasurable (for the most part).
