Great. See pic related. I made this chart ages ago and the position of the Miner might give the wrong impression that it's a major work. It's alright but I'd say there are better.
If you liked Kokoro, you should at least read And Then, Wayfarer and The Gate. They share similar themes and tone; some critics like to group them into a thematic trilogy). I'd say those are the meatier of his books. His lighter works are still enjoyable but they're not particularly philosophical. There's also an unfinished autobiographical novel which is pretty good.

Check Shiga Naoya for a similar writer of the same time (he was a disciple of Soseki). For the kinda faggy scholar lifestyle, check Mori Ogai. Some anon recommended John Nathan's biography on Soseki, but I haven't checked it yet.

Should probably get one of these going for Kawabata and Tanizaki too.

I am thinking about doing a diploma in a foreign language next year. I was thinking of Russian or Japanese. It isn't going to give any employment advantage in my discipline and the reason I want to do it is for literature but also because I would like to learn a second language.
It's also unlikely that I'll spend any length of time in either country. Is this a stupid reason to learn another language? Has anyone done something similar here?

I've just started reading The Master and Margarita. So far it mostly deals with the life of Christ and the Bible.
So, is it necessary to have read the Bible to fully appreciate The Master and Margarita?
And a more general question, is there a site that gives you recommended readings for a work before you read it?
These infographics are the closest thing I've seen to what I'm looking for.
