"Until such time there were Schoenmaker to wait for; and Chiclitz the munitions king and Eigenvalue the physician (epithets characteristically stemming from Sidney's day though Sidney had known neither men personally) to fill up time."
V, by Thomas Pynchon

Does anyone else feel like society is falling apart?

Obviously, this sentiment has been expressed by the voxboxes of countless other generations (Fitzgerald, Bukowski, Easton Ellis, etc.), and will probably be echoed until the end of time, but it feels especially pertinent to me now.

More and more I see young people with no ambition or intellectual interests, only interested in sex and marijuana; more and more it seems like the bare minimum is okay to give. Basic things like interest in literature or knowledge of history are considered rare and laudable, when really they should be something everyone has. And a university education is something that everyone is required to have, costs 100k USD, but... for what? A bed, three meals a day, and unlimited access to a social pool of dating and drugs? People end up in their twenties still living with their parents because uni extended their adolescence by four years.

If you've stayed with my grumpy rambling this far, I thank you. These are thoughts that have been troubling to me lately. Call me chicken little. The society is falling, the society is falling.

Posted on /lit/ because there's no /phil/ at the moment.
