i was a naive high school student when i read this and it really opened my mind up to a lot of different philosophies and theories on the origin of "how we came to be". its a great read even if some of his facts arent completely backed with tons of evidence.

I recently finished this book.

Positive remarks:
- Well written, smart, drew me in etc
- Interesting philosophical themes and ideas on anthropocentrism, overpopulation, 'the good life' and whatnot
- Cool approach to have a talking Gorilla lecture to the main character
- Overall a nice read, I'm glad I picked it up

Negative remarks:
- I get Quinn's environmental agenda but I'm not really on board
- What am I to make of "humans are fucking up the world and need to rethink how we live"? It has been said before but this book just says it in an intriguing way
- Ultimately I'm all for humans destroying themselves in the end so whats the big deal with trying to save something that is already broken?

Any thoughts people? Maybe a discussion about its prevalent themes and what Quinn did well and not so well would be cool.

1. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster
for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of
those of us who live in "advanced" countries, but they have
destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected
human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological
suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have
inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued
development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly
subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage
on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social
disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased
physical suffering even in "advanced" countries.
> 2. The industrial-technological system may survive or it may break
down. If it survives, it MAY eventually achieve a low level of
physical and psychological suffering, but only after passing through a
long and very painful period of adjustment and only at the cost of
permanently reducing human beings and many other living organisms to
engineered products and mere cogs in the social machine. Furthermore,
if the system survives, the consequences will be inevitable: There is
no way of reforming or modifying the system so as to prevent it from
depriving people of dignity and autonomy.

> 3. If the system breaks down the consequences will still be very
painful. But the bigger the system grows the more disastrous the
results of its breakdown will be, so if it is to break down it had
best break down sooner rather than later.

very intelligent man, that's interesting.

A lot of people pass off this book as new-age bullshit, as it has some hypotheses within it concerning the bible, but really I think that it's a tool the author uses to try and rattle christians. A lot about this book very accurately diagnoses problems with modern human society, though it doesn't offer a solution. It's a very easy thing to read for people who have difficulty reading heavy literature and lots of non-fiction. I recommend it for people who are trying to get an idea of why people are struggling in modern society.

A lot of Daniel Quinn diagnoses issues in modern society.

Chinua Achebe contrasts tribal society with modern society as well in a lot of his works.
