It is because of its association to this website and people not good at looking into details. Also due to the creator's input of the work. People come off that he didn't know what he was doing and just made up stuff on the fly. Although they don't understand the context of the moment he created it. He had an occultic epiphany and went hard with Freudian and Jungian concepts.

Evangelion is literally just a Hermann Hesse novel. Individual lost in life and has to find meaning in it through spirituality.

I think Hesse's Demian is a good contender. Even has a character akin to Kaworu which wakes the MC up.

This is also another good contender. Although I think this novel pretty much feels like EoE during the Egg synthesis moment in the film. Rather than the entirety of Eva.
