Why was old fantasy cover art so good? Why can a single good old-fashioned fantasy book cover make me feel that "wow a whole world to explore" feeling in a way an entire modern fantasy book can't?

Are imaginations just getting smaller or something? Back then, even schlocky shitty concept art seemed to tap into something unique. Nowadays even the most high effort shit seems bland and derivative.

After reading this I experienced a profound existential crisis over the realization that the entirety of The Lord of The Rings, was nothing more than the sad, boring, and ultimately insignificant denouement of The Greatest Story Never Told.

Through the misty valleys
Between the bleak mountains
Under grey clouds
Mine in the black night
On a proud horse
Wearing black clothes
Strong weapon in hand

Endless dead trees
An eternity of cold
Over stick and stone
Into the shadows

Out from the fog
Out from the darkness
Out from the mountain's big shadow
Castle of dreams

Then stops the race
That lasted a lifetime
For the man goes
Into the castle of dreams

What books have feelings of discovery and untamed worlds

I'm reading Watership Down and the newness of everything to the rabbits makes me want to read more books like it, something with undiscovered country, terra incognita

It can be on any level you like, conceptual or literal or anything, scifi or fantasy or literary. I just like the vibe.
