Suttree is really good. Not my favorite author by any means but if some one told me he was theirs, I would just be happy they read and enjoy literature.

Suttree staggered erect in the midst of this sorry spectacle
groaning like a bear. The old man had fallen back. The girl was
pulling at the old lady but she was hanging onto his leg with a
maniac’s strength and gibbering the while. You ghastly bitch, he
said, and fetched her a kick in the side of the head which stretched
her out. With this the girl fell upon him in much the same manner.

I recently finished pic related and found it quite captivating. Having now read this and Blood Meridian and The Road (which was okay), is there better McCarthy or are the former two his best work, lone stars in a tedious void? Is reading through his oeuvre worthwhile or are there otherwise master works there among his scribblings yet read by me?

This is the greatest novel written in the last 50 years.

And then I'm goin to ast him: What did you have me in that crapgame down there for anyway? I couldnt put any part of it together.
Suttree smiled. What do you think he'll say?
The ragpicker spat and wiped his mouth. I dont believe he can answer it. I dont believe there is an answer.

Is there anything truly similar to this? Carefree dereliction and chaos?

I was recommended Wise Blood but that was not anything like Suttree. Terrible book.

Why does Suttrees sad depressing life seem so good.
