How do you become good at reading texts in a foreign language?

As for me the foreign language is English.
I was trying to read Greek philosophy in my native language and I just feel that the translation is not good enough.
Now when I picked up an English translation, the text is kinda hard to follow for me because I am not used to reading in English and my vocabulary is quite poor.

What could I do to improve this? I was thinking of making a translation of the entire text using a paper dictionary so I fully understand everything but it will take a lot of time. Do I just read simple books and translate every word I do not understand?
