OP is a small-time author. I've been published four times, only once for money and only once for a competition. I will not be revealing the names of my pieces or where I was published, but if anyone is curious about how it goes, feel free to ask me questions!

I have some questions of my own, mainly about how to publish a "big" work. I have a book that I want to present to a publication company that is worth its salt - established, well-regarded, etc. - but I'm unsure how to connect myself to that resource. Do I have to get an agent first? Or is it really as simple as emailing an editor / publisher from a company asking about submission periods and opportunities?

Why does /lit/ hate DFW?

It is just because he was a precursor to writers like John Green? That may be true but Green's style lacks everything that was good about DFW in the first place. It's like saying that Brian Eno is bad because he led to shitty EDM producers.
