i've probably read jurassic park ten times. the dinosaurs don't get less awesome.

to answer your second question, i've given up reading plenty of terrible books. i think all of them were written by women. draw your own conclusions from that.

>You cannot claim someones political views from his vague quotes.

"Socialism, Communism, or whatever one chooses to call it, by converting private property into public wealth, and substituting co-operation for competition, will restore society to its proper condition of a thoroughly healthy organism, and insure the material well-being of each member of the community."

Hey /lit/, I busted my ass cleaning a few shitty Internet Archive scans into
pretty epubs and felt like the world should share my efforts.

Karel van Wolferen - The Enigma of Japanese Power:

So let's make this a share thread I guess.

I'm going to make the safe assumption, given the political biases and ignorance shown, and say you're all Americans from Flyoverville who only got into their safety schools but because you're smarter than the average hick think you're intellectually capable.

Absolutely disgusting.

Hey /lit/, I'm looking for a fairly short story, and I'm fairly certain the author is of Asian decent. I remember reading it a few months ago on the interwebs. It's about two people that believe themselves to be strangers, but are actually one another's perfect match. There may have been some past life stuff. It's a fairly sad tale. I've been trying to Google it to no avail. Any help would be awesome. I'm not expecting much, but if anyone by some slight chance knows what I'm talking about, I'd be really grateful.

First time posting here on /lit/, and I have a few questions. Are there any librarians here? Anyone with sizeable personal libraries?

I have a few thousands of books in the house, most passed down through generations and some acquired on my own. I figure what with Amazon deleting people's kindle books, and e-books you're not allowed to read out loud, having actual printed books that are my own physical property that I can read, as loud as I want and without anyone's permission, is kind of valuable. So I was thinking of going full ass-pie, cataloguing everything, put them in bookcases in order of category and author.

So what are good ways of cataloguing books? Is there a free (as in freedom) program that can help be database everything? What about classification systems? Library of Congress seems like a nice system, is their entire database freely available online?

Are there any good stand-alone fantasy novels? I want to read a few over summer without getting entrenched in some 30 book long quest for gold plated seinfeld dvd's.

I'm also a psychology major. I'm writing two books, and I really do believe that I could be a reasonably successful writer before I even graduate.

That book is garbage. One in a hundred million other books about women coming of age. Its only significance is its historical importance. Yes, it was my least liked book as well.

I feel you, OP. Last year, my senior year in high school, I took AP English. I was absolutely *astonished* when I got to college and read the work that a lot of students produce. I know that I was lucky enough to attend a private school that placed a great focus on arts and expression, as well as developing one's own natural talents; whether they be in the humanities or the hard sciences. I am also aware that not everyone had the opportunity to grow up with a family that was as literate and analytical as mine. My mother and I would regularly talk about books of all kinds that we read, analyzing every facet of them. I learned from my family and my teacher to be a very good writer (when I commit to it).

But as privileged as I am, it boggles my mind to see people that write like this. I don't understand how someone could make it to college without knowing how to read or write above what to me appears to be an 8th grade level. You seem to be in a similar situation to me.

Britfag here,

I really hate to say it, because I don't mean to belittle America's cultural achievements, of which there are many -- but whenever I visit family in Chicago, I ask the people I meet, be they friends or family, if they like to read, what they like to read, their favourite authors, etc.

Unfailingly those under 30 either say 'I don't like reading' or shrug and recite the title and author of the last book they were forced to read for highschool/uni.

Those over 30 mostly also reply with some disdain for reading, but I know a few people here and there who really understand it and enjoy it.

And, I don't mean to generalise overmuch: I'm not saying ALL Americans are illiterate, vacuous zombies.

Just most of the ones I've met.

Seriously considering buying an eReader because I live abroad and cannot put up with the prices and unavailability of English books in a non-English speaking nation. Which eReaders do you recommend?

More importantly, I was doing a bit surfing and came across prototypes of full-color eReaders. When do you think these will be available?

Thank you in advance.
