I'm late to the party, is pic related worth reading as a meditiation on messianic religions and the consequences of colonization, or is it just fun space pulp about worms?

My works include LotR, Dune, Star Wars, and The Big Lebowski. I believe all of these contain valuable lessons for a nascent people in need of myths about life's challenges.

Rereading this, I finished the first book and Emperor God

I was asking myself how Padisha was going to explain the Landsraad and cover Harkonnen for attacking unprovoked the Atreides ?

Is the Dune series worth getting into? I've heard the first couple of books are good, but then it nose dives in quality.

What does /lit/ think about Dune?

I've never read any of them, and a friend told me only the first book of the ones written by Frank is good, and then they rapidly go downhill, and told me to stay far, far away from the ones his son wrote.

I really thought at least the original ones are all good, but he says they get too "philosophical" and "preachy".

How true is this? Also share experiences reading these, and the books following the original hexalogy.

Opinions on Dune? I'm about 10% of the way through and I'm really enjoying it so far, but I don't want to commit to reading it unless I'm sure it can keep me entertained for the whole thing.

Just finished Dune.

Why does everyone like this book so much? The characters (other than the Baron. Kynes, and Alia, who weren't explored much at all) were incredibly bland. The plot itself felt kind of generic, but maybe Herbert helped establish some of the tropes that I find dull. I did enjoy the world-building and the appendices after the book were pretty interesting. As someone with a Muslim background, I also thought the Fremen religion was fascinating to read about. Too bad almost all the characters sucked.

Paul is a Gary Stu with zero personality until the last chapter.

Can Dune be read as a stand alone or do you have to keep reading on into the series (like how Lord of the Rings is written or Harry Potter)

Is this book really worth reading? Why was it so revolutionary. It's just about a spice isn't it?

I just finished this today.
Not sure what I'll read next, perhaps the sequel.
