Hi /lit/,

I've been writing for about 5 months now, aiming for at least an hour of uninterrupted work.
I've mainly been writing narratives in short story and 'potential' novel formats. However I've come to realize that writing short stories and novels is not for me.
I've been reading some poetry and decided I want to learn about it, and ultimately see if I can become a poet (corny I know).

Problem is, I haven't read much before.

What does it take to be a poet? How is a poet different from novelists and short story writers?

What are some essential poets to read? Both for enjoyment and to learn about the structure of meaning of poetry.

And finally, how do you become a poet?

And sadly did he shake his head
poetic verse taken for dead
by plebs patrician only in name
illiterate readers making /lit/ lame

Oh! I'd yet to discover
this board's like most - bored with the lover
for in their hearts passion had died
in their mothers' basements along with their pride
