The only thing for me that keeps it all from being dumb wish fulfillment or some other psychoanalytic/anthropological explanation is that it could have been ultimately been selected against as a trait, and we are just left with evidence that points to it having existed at some point. Think about all the livestock we breed and how they are so different from their wild ancestors, so plain and adapted to dependency on an easier life. We have done the same thing to ourselves more or less. We have given up the "extrasensory" abilities we may have had, which humans have historically (and still do) often associate with wild animals. Languages too have evolved through selection by speakers, who say what is understood far more than what is pure, otherwise we wouldn't have so many languages and shifts in meanings of words. I don't think it's unreasonable that a deep past was more enchanted. And I don't think it could be known with certainty either. Most stories of "miracles" are likely nonsense, and even if they were true, were almost certainly misinterpreted. And we'd like to believe them, I think, because of a dim awareness that we are not all that is possible, merely possibilities ourselves.
