Being a cop for so long always takes it's toll. Drinking too much, depression, sleeping pill. Some cops, even good cops, became loud bigots. Spouse saw it first.

Hayes still drink too much. Work long hours so sleeping was no problem and his wife left 5 years earlier for another guy.

He had just reached the point where he thought the human race was despicable. Himself included though he was a good and honest cop. It was the ability of every human being under the right circumstances to do something completely and utterly vile.

I have some story ideas I want to explore, but I'm concerned they wont be well received.

I'd like to write some historical fiction set during early Cold War through Vietnam. The problem is, I'm only 23. Is it appropriate for me to write about this time period? Do you think that such fiction, no matter how well researched, will be regarded as insulting and ignorant?

Any tips on how to avoid that perception?

Cheers

So I want to read more about detective and cop stories and things dealing with investigation, picking up clues and all that kind of stuff, any recomendations?

Also since I'm not really knowledgeable on noir, I wanted to know if that genre actually deals with investigation instead of just the detective getting laid and smoking by the shitload?

Hey /lit/

What are the essential detective/mystery/noir novels?

Looking for some good noir fiction, not necessarily detective though. Something modern would be nice and let's leave out Hammet, Chandler, or Daly.

So, /lit/ tell me: what makes a good detective story? Things you should and shouldn't do, cliches to avoid, etc.

The rain was unbearable. For two weeks now it had been beating against the single window of his top floor apartment. The rickety old fire escape knocking against the smog stained brick walls again and again and again. It wouldn't have bothered him if he'd had a real case to work on, to take his mind off of things. But after what happened at the casino he knew that wasn't going to happen for a while. He took another drag and opened the bottle of quarter rye he'd picked up from the 711 on the way back from visiting his old partner, Harry. He'd hoped visiting his friend would clear his head, Harry had always enjoyed conversation, but that .38 he took between the eyes sure changed that; along with a lot of other things. The cheap booze burned his throat, he hated whiskey, but drunk was drunk, and drunk was forgetting.

Looking for recommendations for detective novels, ideally set in the first half of the 20th century.
