I only have the Robin Buss translation so I can't comment on the others. It is an absolute pleasure to read so I've never felt the need to search any other translations.

What's the best movie version of this? I thought it would be better to ask here as it's more likely that people replying will have actually read the book.

Here are, in my view, the aesthetic pinnacles for each publisher.

What are you thoughts on The Count of Monte Cristo?

I'm about 450 pages in, and the first few hundred pages were great but I've hit some boring spots.

What are the best novels for pure entertainment?

Don't include anything trashy or poorly written.

Good afternoon /lit/ I am not a regular on this board and my book collection is pretty much non-existant but my enjoyment so far with a free ebook of the Count of Monte Cristo has me wanting to purchase a physical copy and I would like some advice on this.

I do not have an Kindle or tablet, instead initially I had been reading it among other free books on my smartphone.

Now not knowing any better I went into Waterstones today and found 6 different copies of the same book.
A Hardback at £15 and paperbacks ranging from £2-£10 I do like the solid feel of a hardback but the number of paperbacks makes me wonder if the story has different variations/translations I should watch out for.

>TLDR version
Want to buy physical copy of Count of Monte Cristo, what version and from where?

Doorstoppers are beautiful and I love them.

As long as they're actually good.

I often recommend The Count of Monte Cristo as good entry-level essential lit. Definitely check it out.

Was anyone else disappointed that he ended up with Haydee instead of Mercedes? Aside from their shared desire for revenge, I don't see how the characters had much an emotional connection. Overall, I felt like Haydee was a one-dimensional fantasy woman, whereas Mercedes was a real, flesh-and-blood woman who loved Dantes with all her heart. At the end of the book, when he and Haydee are sailing away together, while Mercedes is presumably alone in a state of constant self-reproach for having thought him dead all those years ago, I felt like Dantes had left behind his true love for a trophy wife.

What do you guys think?

Hey /lit/, got a question for you guys.

What's the difference between the abridged and unabridged versions of The Count of Monte Cristo? I bought the book a while ago but haven' read it yet. Decided to start on it, but then realized that I had got the abridged version where I would have gotten the unabridged had I been paying attention.

Is there a huge difference? Will I be missing much if I just read the abridged version, or is the unabridged version a must? It's too late for me to exchange this book, so if I went for the unabridged I would have to repurchase the book and just give the one I have away or something.

I've seen the most recent movie multiple times, so I know the basic story already, if that makes any difference.

Hello /lit/, I was wondering if there were any book similar to the Count of Monte Cristo. I'd have to say it's my favorite book. :D

Wow. I just finished this book earlier today. What an amazing story. Great characters, great story-telling, great dialogue, great writing. Besides being sleepy or tired, not once did I ever WANT to put this book down while reading it over the course of a month. What a wonderful, emotionally moving book. I shed manly tears during some of the final chapters.

I can go on and on about this book, but I'm telling you /lit/, you should read it.

You might not believe me, but there is some hope. Turns out you can churn out good literature just from being at least half white.
