Something is bugging me with Kafka on the Shore. I won't bother with another topic so I'll ask here.

I'm not a big fan of anime and manga. I do not hate it and I do watch or read some, but I dislike wackiness and how woman are represented. So I picked this novel, expecting to see a different view on Japanese life. But what I found is something that is present in nearly every anime and manga. You have all the things there. Guy talking to cats, ufos, some gore, and teenage protagonist who gets a handjob from the first girl that he meets.

So, the problem I have is why is no one openly hating this in a book as much as they openly hate it in manga?
