i didn't really enjoy the first part either OP, i found it to be very boring and felt myself skipping over parts of it. The second part is much funnier and i think better presented and written, i'd definitely say continue with the book and do try and read the first part but honestly i didn't much care for it, so couldn't blame you if you skipped it.

Yeah, there was a short story called "Ambush at Fort Bragg" that had a similar character.

I actually admire Tom Wolfe for this. He seems to try to describe the good and bad quirks of various cultures without being judgmental. Still, people are so touchy these days that I'm surprised he isn't constantly accused of racism.

I've heard that he is married to a Jewish woman, so maybe people assume he can't be *that* bigoted, under the circumstances.
