>Yet Nazis were not fond of Céline, who accused Adolf Hitler of secretly being Jewish because he was not ridding France of its Jews fast enough. In his diary for December 1941, the German novelist Ernst Jünger, then a Nazi officer, noted that for two hours, Céline ranted to him that German soldiers should “shoot, hang, exterminate the Jews.” Céline recommended that Jews be rooted out “neighborhood by neighborhood, house by house. If I carried a bayonet. I’d know what has to be done.”
What was his problem?

Garbage fucking film
>In 1938, Renoir replies to Céline in the Communist daily newspaper Ce Soir (edited by Aragon) where the filmmaker wrote a weekly column. Louis-Ferdinand Céline had just published one of his bestsellers, Bagatelle pour un massacre (reissued twice during the Occupation, and not republished since then). This lengthy pamphlet attributes to Jews the responsibility for the coming war (from which they will profit) and stigmatises those servile « Aryans » guilty of sympathy towards Jews. At several points in this work, Céline attacks the world of cinema, « always so eminently Jewish », and in particular Renoir’s la Grande Illusion, because in this film, for the first time, the Jew – played by Marcel Dalio – is portrayed in a positive light as a « supercapitalist » who loves the people rather than as a victim. « This Grande Illusion celebrates for us therefore the marriage of the simple, crude, small-time trickster of an Aryan worker, a cocky square-basher turned technician, with the little Jew, dibbuk, millionaire, slimy Messiah, tomorrow naturally Commissar of the People, as predestined. All that is required for the realisation of the Soviet Jew-worker... ». Céline’s argument proved popular among his admirers and imitators, starting with Rebatet, then Bardèche and Brasillach, but it has been curiously overlooked by numerous commentators in the post-war years who have discussed « whether la Grande Illusion was an anti-Semitic film ».
