I've heard they are pretty good. Also "Animorphs" is supposed to be good. But I've only read wings of fire so far.

Yes, I read them with my children. More often older stuff like Narnia, Wind in the willows, Around the world in 80 days.... But sometimes newer stuff. They can understand a lot at younger ages if you read it too them.

Also, you can homeschool them anyway. They'd go to school but your children will trust and learn from you. Just put in the time. There are many resources online, I like the book lists from www.amblesideonline.org

Have you finished the Western Canon? Whatever you think is worth putting in there, is a list of the best of the best, the greatest of all time. Reading anything else is wasting your limited time on untested schlock. How many books will you read in your life 2000? Less? You really think you have time for 51 Shades of Grey?

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. The
Norse one is good after that if they like the Greek.

He should've stayed with Miss. Mary Phattass.

I just read it to my children. I think they quite enjoyed it.
