Talent. Not genius.pic related Nah, kidding.

So, he's that good? I'm pretty sure you're the only guy on the board that keeps hyping him. I've got Portrait of a Lady sitting around.

Will James' knowledge help me to manipulate women into sucking my dick?

Vladimir Nabokov thread?
Vladimir Nabokov thread.

My favorite book by him is Lolita but I'm also partial to Ada or Ardor. Thoughts about this unique author?

Hey /lit/

I've been avoiding my copy of Lolita for quite some time now because, as a gay man, I fear that I would be deeply uncomfortable with such eroticism. However, I'm not sure if passing up what others would consider to be a classic is a great idea.

Please help me come to a conclusion. Thanks.

Non-Russian readers do not realize two things: that not all Russians love Dostoevski as much as Americans do, and that most of those Russians who do, venerate him as a mystic and not as an artist. He was a prophet, a claptrap journalist and a slapdash comedian. I admit that some of his scenes, some of his tremendous, farcical rows are extraordinarily amusing. But his sensitive murderers and soulful prostitutes are not to be endured for one moment.

If you don't read the notes Nabokov writes for his own works, you are fucking foolish.

They're entertaining as hell. He is the ultimate embodiment of "haters gonna hate."

>I write like
Vladimir Nabokov

Twelve polar bears fought the battle for who would claim the Arctic. The battle ensued and eleven polar bears lost their lives. The victor, sheathed in red, stood atop his fiery mountain with his arms outstretched in triumph. But then, a helicopter flew in, armed with many missiles, and it fired all of them at the bear. The newly crowned King of the Arctic jumped and evaded all the missiles, which boomeranged and destroyed the helicopter. Unbeknownst to the bear, the helicopter was carrying ten different strains of deadly militant Ebola that was genetically enhanced to make host in any living creature. Because of the explosion, the deadly virus was unleashed throughout the world, and King Arctic only had 48 hours to live.

Go until depletion, rep out until failure if you have the guts. Go until the mind and body keel over and there the lesson is learned. Like I said years ago, there will come a time when the energy I took for granted is gone. After that, it's all about guts and defiance and not freaking out in decisive moments. It becomes a measure of your character. What the samurai called Makoto. - Vladimir Nabokov.

Since I became an English Major (inb4 u gonna be poor) I decided I would start reading more. Here are the books I've read so far and what I thought of them.

Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf- I was disappointed. I thought this was really boring. The writing itself was good, but I couldn't really care to much about most of the characters except Septimus Warren Smith. Maybe I would appreciate more on a second read.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway- This was pretty good. I've always liked Hemingway's minimalist style, though I didn't enjoy the plot of A Farewell to Arms in high school. But each of the characters were unique and memorable, especially Pilar and Pablo. It kept my interest the whole way and really paid off at the end.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde- This was really good. If you need an example of what wit is, this is it. Lord Henry is awesome. The only bad thing about this book is when there is a whole chapter devoted to Dorian's lavish things, but that could be intentional.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov- Of all the books I'd read so far, this one made me feel the most. The prose itself is great, if not a bit too purplish. You are never sure how much to trust Humbert's account, but by the end of the book I think I believed him. I'll definitely check out Pale Fire eventually.

Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse- I expected to like this because I really liked Siddhartha in high school. But I couldn't finish it. I'm not sure why I didn't give it time to grow. I thought it was whiny. It was also preachy, bringing back the western Buddhism of Siddhartha where I thought it didn't belong. Maybe the protagonist reminds me too much of myself or how I was in high school (I loved books like Notes From the Underground and Nausea in high school). I might give it another chance someday, but I probably should have read it back when I really hated myself.

I'll post the rest if people are interested (which you aren't I'm sure)
