Self-denunciation as it may be, four points against natural language metaphysics (NLM) - the attempt to describe (maybe even mold!) "Ultimate Reality" with natural language words, without reference to number - have become apparent. Firstly, it suggests magical thinking. Secondly, it is an attempt to salvage the obscurantism of religion. Thirdly, it associates with fiction and therefore has the coherence of fiction. Fourthly, it is an attempt to escape Thrasymachus' and Nietzsche's conclusions ('Might makes right') about power and justice, which reflect practical life.

First point, NLM suggests and is for magical thinking. Call it Platonic participation, neoplatonism, call it Jungian synchronicity, Berkeley's subjective idealism or whatever popular system is on /x/. The common thread in all NLM is that it tries to relate what apparently is not causally relevant, what is not in proximity - spooky action from a distance, unmediated by regular, daresay atomic, elements. "By believing in F, we PARTICIPATE in the C". How does one "believe" in something? By subvocalizing or mumbling it in natural language words. This then is suggested to have a real effect on one's person, on the scale of simply moving around. Motifs, signs, symbols, figures, freed from the granularity of the Epicureanism and Aristotelianism of the sciences, allow us to "feel" our way to apparent meaning. Of course, this is not a problem in itself. The problem is that NLM's attempt to relate non-apparent things appears to resemble the same mode of thinking in Voodoo, Santeria, animism, shamanism, genre fantasy magic. This mode of thinking is criticised if it is from subalterns and thirdies, but put the label of "Greek", "German idealist", "idealist" or "metaphysics" onto it and it becomes respectable. They are excluded: "All worthy people think rationally (causally)." "We (Westerners) do not think rationally (causally)." Yet """metaphysics""" allows your magical thinking to appear rational, while others irrational. Unsound inconsistency!

Second, continuing from the first, it tries to salvage the obscurantism of religion. It stifles that clear autistic univocal thinking to lead readers onto an analogical goose chase. Every romanticist, religious charlatan West and East of the Mississippi benefits from aquantitative metaphysical rhetoric. Copeland, Hovind, Harun Yahya, Deepak Chopra are some examples. Van Til? A modern Blaise Pascal, a shameful self-descent into rhetoric!. Stifling thought for church, mosque, ashram and coffer!

Thirdly - it is coherent as fiction. For roughly a week or more, the /lit/ catalogue was viewed and copied into the wishlist. 157 items of fiction. 21 items of philosophy. Fictionalists and poets pretending to be non-fiction!

Fourthly - it lets you think words can save you. Take creatio ex-nihilo, the most exaggerated example of NLM, "words beget reality". Whatever problem is out there needs bullets not words and NLM is mumbling incantations.

Going to /sci/.

You're both retarded, too. I'm not critiquing Stoner. In fact, I loved it. I'm attacking OP's vapid commendation.
>His sadness did hit me, I identified with him not having any friends
This is the kind of garbage discussion we get when ignorant tourists from /r9k/ who frequent feels threads come to /lit/. Stoner wasn't "sad". He was a dispirited stoic who whittled himself into an ungratifying career and built ungiving relationships leaving him feeling empty. The absence of friends was hardly even on the mind of Stoner. He reminisced about his mates during undergrad, but he seemed to have reflected on their growing apart forbearingly. It was his home life and career struggles that defined his character more than anything. If I recall correctly, he never really had much of a desire for new drinking buddies like he had before. Instead, his emotional void was more or less resolved by intimate companionship and intellectual stimulation offered by Katherine.

Jesus christ, the summerfag influx has been terrible this year.

It's nuanced critique with a red-pill over-dose of realism. I think that's the best way to describe it.

Low IQs cannot cope with it and think he's a misogynist.

I'm taking an English class right now and the professor examines every single fucking book through the lens of fascism. I'd rather just read the books and not discuss it than have every class discussion be about fascism.
