Is this a modern phenomenon?

Are there non-modern books (fiction, non fiction) that go into vidrel? No, people born into material wellness being miserable doesn't count. A few specific things I want to read more about:

Why is he sad about going through the motions? Most people, especially those that weren't born noble just went through the motions and didn't mind it.

I think Emerson's Self-Reliance hits the nail on the head, and he basically sounds like the typical conformist anti-thesis to the self reliant man. Anything else like this? I'd love to read about analysis that explains if the system is actually impeding people's self-actualization or not.

Everyone worked, why is this a big deal now? I'm down to read stuff on why the individual archetype would see any type of situation he's in as miserable. Is it the lack of impact on the world?

Like I wrote above, this guy thinks he's stuck. Why? Would the lack of faith be the cause of such pessimism? Why not use his good material status to improve himself, and overcome this. How would he be able to do this?
I don't mind hearing your thoughts on it, just don't go too deep into projecting things that aren't shown in this video.
