A surprisingly difficult read, but quite rewarding in itself.

I don't think it has aged very well at all. It suffers from the same problem that most 19th century texts do: it reads like a soap opera. However, whilst Flaubert isn't on Austen's level by any means, we are given some kind of insight into the workings of 19th century France. Especially with regard to the importance of relationships and the workings of affairs.

The overall message, that over-consumption leads to evil is something that I think is important to keep in mind, even to this day. The message itself isn't anything ground-breaking, but the
