When I pull up out front, you see my trying to roll dubs
When I roll twenty deep it's D20 in the dungeon
Niggas heard I fuck with Phillip K. (Dick), now they wanna show me love
When you sell like Issac Asimov and the hoes, they wanna fuck
But homie, ain't nothin' changed: hoes down, G's up
I see Aramani in the cut, hey nigga, roll the weed up!
If you watch how I move, you'll mistake me for a player or pimp
Been hit with a few shells, so now I walk with a limp
In the Sci-fi convention they sayin', "Gene Wolfe, you hot."
They like me, I want 'em to love me like they love Arthur C. Clarke
But holla in Comic Con, the geeks'll tell you I'm loco
And the plan is to put the science fiction game in a chokehold
I'm fully focused, man, my next novel on my mind
Got a mil' out the deal and I'm still on the grind
Now shorty said she feelin' my writing style, she feelin' my literary flow
Her girlfriend willin' to get blinded by science (fiction) and they ready to go

How hard is writing stories? I starting reading more about 2~3 years ago in my spare time as a hobby and I am feeling really interested in writing, but I feel that it's a skill too difficult to adquire as a person who started to read books late in life (23 years) and has a very demanding job (i am an electric motor engineer). It's worth trying or it's really hard and I probably won't be able to make anything decent? I tried to write a short story last week and I felt really frustrated.

I remember reading O'Connor back in high school and her writing definitely had a strong and lasting impact on my life.

Not sure if Gene Wolfe should be in the same post as her but I hear great things about the meme author/Pringles guy.

How do you go from All-American poster boy to Dr Robotnik? Is this what it takes to make it as a fantasy writer?

Do great writers need to have a hiqh IQ? Seeing how imagination and intelligence is connected i started to wonder if maybe, empathy and others qualities that make a writer great are not related to IQ as well. What do you think /lit/? Do you know of any great writer who wasn't that smart?

When I get the right combination of whiskey and surge and other drugs in my system, I'll write this out as a longer essay on the Urth list. This is about what I've found I like most about fiction, in fiction, and especially in the work of Wolfe. Any suggestions what authors employ these ideas are welcome!

The golden rule in fiction is show don't tell. But straight up badasses like Wolfe don't follow the rules. (Seriously, this dude has never given one fuck in his entire life.) What we don't know about is much more interesting then what we know about. The real fiction in fiction is what's not on the page. Real life is disappointing, real life in fiction is disappointing. All the stories we get to read in the Brown Book are great, but what we really want to read is the stories we never get. We pull back the curtain, and the wizard was Severian the whole time. If we had the choice again, would we draw that curtain?

They probably started just wanting to be immortal. At some point they figured that was only possible by becoming enormous. In Claw the Autarch shows Severian a holographic book, showing a creature so large that Urth is a dust mote in its wings. This is probably a ship of the Heirodules, which really is a higher being known as a Heirogramerate. Typhon's children, maybe only some of them (the 17) want to usurp the gods, they are massive sea monsters now, but that's only the larva stage, they want to suck all the resources out of Urth and the sun, to become star ships themselves.

What "statuesque beings" are you referring to? Honestly Shadow in the only book I've haven't reread yet. I'll get it back from my loser friend this weekend and reread it in an hour.

The creatures in the mirrors are creatures from other dimensions, other realities, other time lines. All the possibilities of everything that could possible ever exist. God.

In Lictor, in probably my favorite scene, that girl at the custom party is telling Severian a fairy tale while he's banging her. And in Urth that story is sorta flushed out. Basically, the Heirodules evolved from thinking machines that man made. And they travel back in time to set up the conditions that lead to their creation. They are manipulating Severian into being the founder of that civilization. He's the Adam of the post-flood Urth, that "torture" the thinking machines into Heirodules. Severian thinks they call him "Sireur" because they know he'll be Autarch, but its really because he's the founder of their own civilization. And this is also because the first Severian travels back to set himself up as the Increate. Severian is his own father and his own grandfather, the alpha and the omega, as he says "making of my life a loop instead of a line".

Gene Wolf's Book of the New Sun
(Shadow and Claw, Sword and Citadel)

High fantasy fluidly combined with science fiction. Excellent characters and vivid mythic landscapes.
