this image gets my library-boner up, even if it's just a wallpaper or whatever

Why are books more respected than tv/film/games etc.? Each is a passive consumption of media.

I like books the most, but I don't see why they hold this position.

Is anyone obsessed with owning so large a personal library (physically or otherwise) that you can easily cross-reference? It blows my mind that I can be reading a text that references another, then simply reach other and grab that referenced text.

As a straight guy, should I read Pride and Prejudice just to get it out of the way? I can't help feeling that not reading it would always hang around my neck.

I can't bring myself to read fiction anymore. I don't have the patience to get through the first chapter. I can only read non-fiction and fact based writing. What the fuck?

I have 13 weeks and pretty much no knowledge of philosophy. How much of philosophy can I read and what should I start with and move on to? I was thinking of starting with Sophie's World, is that a good idea, and then what?

I have 13 weeks off. How can I improve my pleb /lit/ tastes? I haven't read a lot of 'proper' books - pretty much everything Terry Pratchett has done, he count of monte cristo, a clockwork orange, 1984, war of the worlds, call of cthulu. I was thinking of reading some philosophy, maybe an intro like A History of Western Philosophy or Sophie's World but then what after that? Also on my list, which I'll read unless I buy something better, are the picture of Dorian Gray, The Hobbit (I just fancy reading it) and some stuff already on my shelves like Fahrenheit 451 and A Brave New World.

I'd like to have a great quote for every situation, not unlike The History Boys. (although I didn't get into Oxford!) How do I go about achieving this?
