I knew better than to argue, and frankly agreed with her more than I’d freely say. I had come because I felt I must, in no small part because I wanted her and others to know that I had done, would do what was expected. And it was true that felt the smallest lightening of the guilt I was carrying as a result—but Calla didn't know, I hoped, that I already felt bad about feeling that relief, even before she stated it so baldly.
And so I left, without another word, slowing a little to give a good stare to the guard (his eyes remained fixed on the floor), the only person I'd probably see today that I could feel a little superior to. Then the jailer unlocked the huge, warped wooden door with a broad grin and an overloud "Good day, blessèd!" and maybe even a wink (the bastard) and I was out into the light, striding as though I had a wind at my back. I'm not sure I knew at that moment that I wouldn't see her again, but even if I had, what would I have done differently? Was there ever any chance that I would have attended her sacrifice, no matter what she said to me from her tiny cell? I don't think so—in fact, I'm quite certain. I still consider myself cleverer than most, but it's been years since I told myself that I'm anything other than a coward.

You fuckers talk about the same 6 or 7 books over and over and over and over again.

ITT: we pretend to be well-read

Talk about some books besides Clockwork Orange/Brave New World/1984/Catcher in the Rye/all this other high school bullshit.

Turn us onto some obscure work that nobody's heard of but is really good or some work that's not obscure but that not enough people are reading.
