Read Santayana's essay on egotism in German "philosophy". I'd summarize it but you obviously have enough time on your hands

Is there an updated version of this with more philosophers in it alongside new ones (Baudrillard, Zizek, Land etc) ???

Also history of philosophy thread... Does anyone actually care about reading the canon ?

For me interesting philosophy goes like this:
>presocratics (Diogenes the masturbator...)
>buncha shit
>stirner
>nietzsche
>bataille
>land

What's your reasoning here? Wouldn't it make more sense to not have background noise when you need to be more concentrated?

I would equate reading "classics", whatever that means, to learning a language like Latin, insofar as learning Latin gives you good grounding to understand Latinate languages, much like reading Aristotle will help you understand The Divine Comedy.

/lit/, can we categorize the tiers of philosophical knowledge in a person? For example, shit tear would be angsty teens who have discovered the magic of complaining against the system, and haven't heard of any actual philosophers; entrance tier - realizing what actual philosophy is, as compared to teen whining, starting to learn about it; god tier being, well, I have no idea what god tier would be.

So yeah, I'm reading Russel's History of Western Philosophy, and I'm wondering: did he really completely ignore Kierkegaard? Like, I can see he doesn't have a chapter, but isn't he at least mentioned? That would seem like an extremely dick move for a philosophy overview.

Hello gentlemen from the e/lit/ of the sauce a yeti ! Foreigner first time poster here.

This year, I came to realise that the only way to succeed in life is to write great literature. As most of people here (except the depressive emos) I think I am clever enough to do it but I first need to read books.

So, I've started to read great literature and I find myself enjoying it. I've seen the picture on the left while lurking on /lit/ and I have decided to read all the works of all the authors on it (considering your advices, I started with Plato).
The point is it's gonna be long and I want to read good, entry-level fictions in the same time; the shorter the better.

tl;dr Read the last sentence.

Hey /lit/

I want to get into philosophy, but I don't really know where to start on this. I had the chance to get some Nietzsche books pretty cheap and also Plato's collected works.

But like I said I have no idea where to start and what philosophs to go for. I just give you an idea of what I am looking for in philosophy:

On one hand I am very interested in philosophy in combination with society, politics and how people live together. So basically philosophy that is related to political theory. On the other hand I like the stuff that is focusing on religion. I am by no means a religious person, but I always found the idea of religions and believes interesting. So basically what good / bad is there to get out of religion, what are different approaches to this topics and how philosophy mixes up with this.
The last thing. I read 'The Stranger' and also some of Dostoyevsky's works and I thought existentialism is very interesting. Or lets say the philosophical topics that focus on life itself. Is there a reason for life, what should we make of life etc. This kinds of question.

I am sorry if some of this might not make sense, but I haven't really looked into philosophy yet. I read parts of a book about ancient greek philosophy, but didn't really have the time to dive deeper into it. I plan on doing so later this year, but like I said I have no idea where to start.
