Tolkien was lightning in a bottle. The Oxford don and expert on the origins of languages who has been creating his own languages as a hobby since he was a boy, who has an intimate knowledge of British and European mythology, creates a world for his new languages to inhabit, and then ends up writing an epic drama set in this world as a sequel to a children's book that he wrote on a whim. This will never be replicated, and so far any attempts to even come close to this greatness are just embarrassing. As far as I'm concerned, modern fantasy began and ended with Tolkien.
