The Sorrows of Young Werther are a "literally me" experience for most young men who first fall in love and experience the soul crushing disappointment of being unable to attain it (be it due to being rejected, her already being taken, duty calling you elsewhere, etc.) Even fucking Napoleon fanboyed over the book.
Goethe makes us feel less alone, it shows immature young men that this experience is a shared one and part of life, not a curse that they alone bear. Knowing that others shared the same challenges and managed to overcome them gives people hope that they can achieve this too, and that their sorrows are not a dead end and inescapable pit.
