My mom is very smart, friendly, kind, and studious. She completely sees through all forms of ideological cant. She never gets angry. When she's disappointed or frustrated she turns inward to examine what she could do better. She doesn't attack people for their little flaws they can't fix. She works hard. She de-escalates when conflicts are useless. She never tried to force a selfish dream of hers on me or my kid brother. She isn't gluttonous and mostly eats simple foods like bread and cheese. She always made healthy lunches for my school days while my friends were stuck with trans-fats and preservatives.

She tells really good stories.

She read me James Herriott books when I was a kid and that inculcated a respect for all living things.

She isn't defensive or judgmental and she doesn't lose patience with others. Unlike the men in my family my mom never has the mentality that engaging with so-and-so is a waste of time because she's some kind of hoipolloi that has the right to trample others.

She played piano for me when I was a little kid and made me want to learn, but didn't force me.

She doesn't view people as problems to be solved.

She is familiar with the Bible and always quotes positive statements from Saint Paul the Apostle.

She encouraged me to study Latin and I ended up the best Latin student in my high school class.

She taught me everything I know about how to survive politics in an office / white collar job.

She has read thousands of books.

She keeps an extensive diary of her readings and ponderings. It is going to be the next <Pensees> or <Meditations>.

She's also the only white person I know who truly appreciates Korean culture and accepts me loving a foreign civilization as much as I love my native United States.
