Do, and should, literary critics rate stuff out of 10? I'm fairly new to literature so I'm not quite sure of the canon and how literary criticism works in general.

this. Barthes is awesome, you can learn all kinds of stuff from him. he holds up well.

but basically this anon is right. it's valuable when understood in the right way. that it turned into social justice juggernaut is a whole other thing.
