>The cast of characters was ethnically diverse, but the book does have issues with racism. Using prejudice against magic powers as a stand-in for racism is incredibly problematic, especially if that prejudice targets white people as well, which will always read as an implicit "reverse racism exists." On top of that, the author introduced chattel slavery and killed off underdeveloped characters of colour.

>I was also disappointed that there wasn’t any queer, genderqueer, or disabled rep. I'm not counting the villainous crime lord who walks with a cane since I wasn’t even sure from the text whether he actually was disabled. Either way, having your only disabled character be a villain is a huge issue, and more so if he’s only pretending to be disabled.

>All in all, I can't in good conscience recommend this book to anyone.
